Starry starry snow

Posted in: daily life

I remember seeing a photo that Bob Davis took in the rain where each raindrop became a jewel. I wanted to take photos like that … so I did.

With the exception of snow instead of rain, lol!

The trick is to set up your external flash with a radio receiver (I use radio poppers) and put it behind the subject pointing slightly up (approx 45 degrees) so it catches more  snowflakes but still points towards the camera so it can rim light your subject. By the time I got outside the snow had mostly stopped so pointing the flash up caught more snow in the air.

The 2nd flash is slightly to the left, and the flash on my camera (the master) pointing to the right  and slightly down to catch the ground snow and reflect light back up at me.

It was a bit tricky to get just right but wow, how fun (except for the numb fingers from handling my metal flash stands)!

Bob Davis has a great tutorial for snow portraits HERE on his Facebook page.

Favorite photo of the night: Elssa jumping in my arms!

Aren’t her ears crazy?!

  1. Bob Davis says:

Wow, you did it. Way to go, those are some cool WTF images. Love the last frame!

  2. I absolutely love the second one to the last… the one of your sister. Her face looks like she knows something the rest of us don’t. Great photo session!
